Biographical Information[edit]

Toshiaki Okamura played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 10 years and won a batting title.

Okamura was signed by the Nankai club in 1939, and he became a starting outfielder soon. He hit .243/.368/.303 in his rookie year, but also set the NPB record for making 3 errors in a game as an outfielder. He still struggled in the next four seasons as his batting average was never higher than .220. In the shortened 1944 season, Okamura had his career year. He played all 35 games with a .369/.434/.400 batting line and won the Japanese Professional Baseball League batting title. His batting average was higher than the winning percentage of the Nankai (.324), and it would be 64 years until the next batting title winner's batting average was higher than his team's winning percentage. (Seiichi Uchikawa did it in 2008) After World War II, Okamura slumped to .263/.354/.321 in 1946 and he only played 93 games combined in the next three seasons. He announced his retirement after the 1949 season and became a coach for Nankai from 1950 to 1960.

Overall, Okamura had hit .229/.340/.285 with 77 steals and 467 hits in 10 seasons in NPB.
