Biographical Information[edit]

Tony Laird played three seasons in the minors.

The San Francisco Giants took him in the 17th round of the January 1981 amateur draft, but he did not sign. The next year, they took him in the 15th round of the January 1982 amateur draft, both times out of junior college. He again did not sign. Undrafted out of the University of Arkansas, he signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1984. He split time between the GCL Pirates (5 for 13, 3B) and Prince William Pirates (.305/.372/.386 in 47 G), while playing error-free ball at 1B and OF.

He spent all of 1985 with the AA Nashua Pirates, the highest level he reached. He hit .258/.363/.354 with 60 walks and fielded .988 as their primary first baseman. He was 7th in the Pirates chain in walks, between Benny Distefano and Scott Loucks. He ended his career as a pro in 1986, playing briefly for Nashua (1 for 4) and for the California Angels' Quad Cities Angels affiliate (.280/.349/.430 in 94 G). He had hit .276/.360/.391 with 113 walks, 121 runs and 107 RBI in 272 games as a pro. His 12 homers were low for a first baseman. He fielded .989 in 213 games at 1B and played four error-free games in the outfield.
