He went in the 44th round of the 1992 amateur draft to the Colorado Rockies as a draft and follow. He signed in 1993 and split the year between the AZL Rockies (.318/.395/.418 in 30 G, 17 SB, 0 CS) and the Bend Rockies (.217/.288/.217 in 19 G, 8 SB, 1 CS). He made the Arizona League All-Star team as one of the four outfielders picked. Had Dermendziev qualified, he would have ranked 5th in the Arizona League in average.

The speedy flyhawk hit only .187/.239/.332 for the 1994 Asheville Tourists with just 6 steals in 10 tries. He did show power, with 7 home runs in 187 AB.
