Biographical Information

Tony Beal peaked at AA, where he spent four seasons.

The New York Mets took him in the 23rd round of the 1980 amateur draft out of high school but he opted for college. The San Francisco Giants selected him in the second round of the January 1981 draft, then the Boston Red Sox picked him in the second round of the 1981 amateur draft's June secondary phase, one pick after Dave Leiper.

Beal made his pro debut with the 1981 Elmira Pioneers, hitting .181/.276/.220. In 1982, he produced at a .253/.338/.376 clip for the Winston-Salem Red Sox, with 38 steals in 48 tries. He had 15 outfield assists but also 16 errors. He was 5th in the Carolina League in steals, tied for 4th in assists in the outfield and second in errors by an outfielder. He was 4th in steals among Red Sox minor leaguers, behind Gus Burgess and Steve Lyons.

He then began a four-year stint with the New Britain Red Sox, posting very similar numbers to the prior year - 38 SB, 10 CS, 19 A, 18 E, .278/.385/.377. He was 8th in the Eastern League in swipes (between Eric Davis and Tom Romano, second in outfield assists (four behind Keith Washington) and led in outfield errors (5 more than Daryl Boston or Benny Distefano). Among Red Sox farmhands, he was 6th in stolen bases, between Mike Ciampa and Chico Walker and 7th with 67 walks (between Walker and Marc Sullivan.

In 1984, he saw reduced action and hit .260/.360/.375 with 14 steals in 21 tries, registering 13 assists in 92 games and fielding .967, a vast improvement on the prior year's .932. Despite his reduced time, he still tied Ron Little for third in the EL in outfield assists. He batted .226/.374/.349 in 1985 with 65 walks and 7 triples. He tied for third in the Red Sox chain in three-baggers. He also tied for 4th in the EL in that department. He hit .241/.316/.412 in 71 games and 192 plate appearances in 1986 to end his career.

Overall, he had hit .250/.353/.363 with 122 steals in 163 tries, 270 runs and 259 walks in 568 games as a pro. He had fielded .946 in the outfield, with 68 assists in 513 contests.
