Biographical Information

Tom Woodring has been a part-time umpire in the major leagues since 2014, working anywhere between 36 and 107 games each year between that year and 2019. He was officially on the staff of the Pacific Coast League during that time span, as he had still not been added to the permanent major league umpire roster.

He was involved in an amusing incident during a PCL game on April 10, 2019, when he got in the way of Finn the bat dog, a labrador retriever who is a mascot of the Las Vegas Aviators and whose task is to retrieve the players' discarded bats and bring them back to the dugout. Perhaps not realizing the canine was on its way, he tossed a discarded bat away from the batter's box himself just as Finn was about to pick it up, earning a round of heartfelt boos from the spectators. Undaunted, the dog ran to the dugout to pick up the stick and complete its assigned task.
