Biographical Information[edit]
First baseman Tom Vangelis played in the Philadelphia Phillies (1948-1949) and Pittsburgh Pirates (1950, 1953-1954) minor league systems. He hit 12 home runs in 127 games his first year, then batted .322 with 20 home runs in 137 games for the Vandergrift Pioneers in 1949. The Albany Senators of the Pirates system took him in the 1949 Rule V Draft. He was assigned to the Waco Pirates for 1950, hitting 26 home runs in 130 games. After missing 1951 and 1952, he returned to hit 22 home runs in 136 games for the Waco/Longview Pirates.
Overall, Vangelas hit .282 with 83 home runs over five seasons.
He was also a running back at the University of Florida. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War.
