High school pitcher Tom McKinnon allowed batters a .118 average in 3 years of high school (63-532), but allowed 81 BB in 120 1/3 IP. The St. Louis Cardinals made him a supplemental 1st round pick in the 1991 amateur draft (28th overall).
In his first pro year (1991), he allowed 16 BB in 8 IP for the AZL Cardinals and 9 BB in 8 IP for the Johnson City Cardinals. In 1992, he had 6 hits in 25 AB as a DH for the AZL Cardinals. In 1993 he played 1B for Johnson City, hitting .301 with 10 HR in 256 AB. In 1994 he hit .280 with 5 HR in 161 AB as a DH/OF for the Madison Hatters, with an awful 3/43 BB to SO ratio. In 1995, McKinnon hit .267 with 2 HR in 172 AB as an OF for the St. Petersburg Cardinals with 5/39 BB/SO.
In 1996, McKinnon moved to the Pine Bluff Locomotives in the independent Big South League. There he hit .351 with 16 HR, 70 RBI, and 11 SB. In addition, he led the league with 64 runs and 99 hits, and made the all-star team.
