Biographical Information[edit]

Tom Mandile was born on March 23, 1944, the son of Thomas Mandile, Sr. and Irene Quinn. He was born and raised in South Medford, MA. He graduated from Medford High School and was signed as a pitcher by the Chicago Cubs. Tom pitched in the minors from 1964-1968. He was in spring training roster with the major league Cubs in 1967 and 1968 where he played with Ernie Banks and pitched against Willie Mays and Hank Aaron.

In his first professional season, he went 11-11 for the St. Cloud Rox of the Northern League, with an ERA of 3.00. A hard thrower, he struck out 121 batters in 177 innings, but also walked 102. His control improved over the next few seasons, and he went a combined 9-8, 3.57 between the Lodi Crushers and AAA Tacoma Cubs of the Pacific Coast League in 1966, earning a first look in major league spring training the next year. He went 9-10, 4.33 for Tacoma in 1967, but in 1968 he regressed badly, with a combined mark of 2-13, 6.03 between Tacoma and the AA San Antonio Missions. It was his final season in professional baseball.

After retiring from baseball, Tom worked for the phone company for over 20 years. He also worked at the Riverside school for kids in the DSS/DYS system from 1994-2005. He was the assistant baseball coach at Pingree School from 2000-2018. He was inducted to the Intercity League Baseball Hall of Fame in 2012.

He passed away on his 76th Birthday, March 23, 2020, after a long battle with blood cancer.
