Biographical Information[edit]

Tom Dolan had a seven-year career as a catcher from 1879 to 1888, at a time when catchers took a beating. He hit only .204, but that wasn't unusual for the times. For instance, Doc Bushong had a 13-year career and hit .214.

Dolan played in all three of the major leagues that existed in the 1880s, and in fact played for teams in St. Louis in all three leagues. He had the most appearances for the St. Louis Browns in 1883, where he is listed as the # 3 outfielder even though he had only 40 games in the outfield and 42 at catcher. The # 4 outfielder was the # 1 pitcher Tony Mullane. The team went 65-33, finishing 2nd in the league. Dolan hit .214, but then the park factor shows that it was a hitters' park.

His minor league career went from at least 1877 to 1895, although since he was 21 in 1877 he was probably playing before that.

In 1890 and 1891, he umpired a total of six games in the American Association.

In 1892 he joined the St. Louis Fire Department.
