Biographical Information[edit]

Tobias Werner has played for the Austrian national team.

Werner debuted in the Austrian Baseball League in 2017, going 3 for 11 with two walks and three runs for the Vienna Wanderers the year he turned 15. [1] In '18, he moved to the Traiskirchen Grasshoppers and hit .235/.358/.279 and stole six bases in seven tries. [2] In 2019, he had a save in four shutout innings and was steady at .224/.366/.277 while going 8-for-8 in swipes. [3] The next year, he showed big strides at .346/.401/.469 with 21 walks, 26 runs and 21 RBI in 20 games while going 1-0 with a 7.40 ERA. He tied Philipp Eckel for 9th in OBP, tied for 7th in hits and was 3rd in walks. [4]

With the '21 Grasshoppers, he kept on developing, still not 20 years old. He hit .437/.493/.815 with 13 doubles, 4 triples, 8 homers, 45 runs and 43 RBI in 28 games while he was 0-1 with a 7.94 ERA. He was 4th in average, 2nd in slugging (.028 behind Eckel), 4th in OPS, 2nd in hits (52, one behind Georg Gvrytishvili), 2nd in doubles (one behind Ferdinand Obed), 1st in triples, tied for 5th in homers and 1st in RBI (one ahead of Eckel and Sammy Hackl). [5] That earned him a spot on Austria's team for the 2021 European Championship. His first game, he started behind the dish against Belgium and struck out and grounded out against Drew Janssen before Georg Stemmer took his spot in the lineup (Hackl moving from DH to C to take his spot in the field). He was 0 for 5 for the Euros and had 17 chances error-free. [6]
