Biographical Information[edit]

Tim Stargell, the nephew of Hall of Famer Willie Stargell, peaked at AA.

Stargell hit .349 with 17 steals in 17 tries and 6 homers in college in 1988. The Seattle Mariners chose him in the 33rd round of the 1988 amateur draft. Not built at all like his famous uncle, Stargell played mostly 2B for the Bellingham Mariners that summer; he hit .279/.343/.395 with 22 steals in 28 tries. He was 8th in the Northwest League in steals and just missed the top 10 in home runs (6).

In 1989, Tim had a busy year between the Wausau Timbers (.278/.360/.469, 20 SB, 12 HR in 90 G) and San Bernardino Spirit (.282/.342/.450 in 34 G). For the year, he had 16 home runs, 22 steals in 37 tries, 81 runs and 32 errors. He He tied for 9th in the Mariners chain in doubles (25), was 4th in home runs, was 4th in RBI (66, between Chris Howard and Tino Martinez), ranked 4th in runs, tied Paul Noce for 6th in steals and was third in times caught stealing.

He remained productive with the 1990 Spirit, hitting .262/.303/.407 with 17 home runs, 84 runs and 96 RBI, but bounced around the field, playing all four infield slots as well as the outfield. He still tied Adell Davenport for 7th in the California League in homers while ranking second in RBI (behind only Frank Bolick). After three seasons in which he placed among the league of franchise leaders, Stargell struggled in his final campaign, batting only .185/.248/.270 in 62 games for the Jacksonville Suns to end it.

Overall, Stargell had hit .260/.319/.404 in 391 minor league games, with 42 home runs, 72 steals in 109 tries, 224 runs and 210 RBI. He fielded .942 at 2B and .977 in the OF, his two main positions.

He is also related to Derrick Sylve.
