The Gashouse Gang
The Gashouse Gang, by John Heidenry, tries (as the name suggests) to tell the story of the Gas House Gang. This reader only got through a bit over a chapter due to the numerous errors or wild statements:
- Claiming that Branch Rickey served in World War I during 1919 - when the War ended in 1918
- Claiming that the Rogers Hornsby-Frankie Frisch was "the biggest and most flamboyant that the world of baseball had ever seen' - what about Honus Wagner, Fred Clarke, Rube Waddell and more for Jack Chesbro and others??
- Saying that Babe Ruth "gracefully exited from the game at the end of the [1934] season" when he in fact neither exited gracefully nor at the end of 1934.
- Claiming that the 1934 season was the end of baseball's golden age...a claim raised about many other seasons - and among his few pieces of evidence (other than it being the subject of his book) was that Ruth "gracefully exited" the game
This was all in the first 39 pages so this reader didn't bother to keep on going.
