Biographical Information

Pitcher Teruo Aida pitched for the Yakult Atoms/Yakult Swallows from 1971 to 1980.

He pitched for Sankyo Seikei in the industrial leagues out of college. The Atoms took him in the 8th round of the 1970 NPB draft. He began his career with a 6-5, 3.76 mark in 138 2/3 innings his first year, but had a sophomore slump that he didn't break free from until his fourth campaign. He was 0-3 with a 7.71 ERA in 1972 and 0-4 with a 5.79 ERA in 1973.

The submarine hurler got out of his slump in 1974, when he had a 3.28 ERA in 35 games (five starts). The next year, his mark was 3.00 in 35 games (four starts) and he was 1-4 with a save. Back to starting in 1976, Aida was 10-9 with a 3.60 ERA in 41 games (22 starts) that year and won the monthly MVP award in August. He was 8th in the Central League in ERA (between Kenji Furusawa and Hajime Kato), tied for 10th with six complete games and tied for fifth with two shutouts (only one off the pace).

He had a 9-9, 4.28 season in 1977. He tied for 9th in the CL in losses, was 7th in starts and ranked 10th in innings pitched. He struggled his final three campaigns, going 3-9 between them. He was 3-6 with a 5.36 ERA in 1978 and did not pitch in the 1978 Japan Series (Yakult beat the Hankyu Braves in seven games). In 1979, he was 0-2 with a 9.45 ERA but also led the minor Eastern League in wins. He had a 0-1, 6.84 record in 1980. He later worked in the family lumber business.

Overall, he was 29-45 with three saves and a 4.34 ERA in 273 games (114 starts) over ten seasons. When his son Yushi Aida (also a submariner) got a win in 2007, they became the first father-son duo to get wins in NPB.
