Biographical Information[edit]
Terry Tata was an umpire in the Midwest League (1960), Northern League (1961-1964), Texas League (1965-1966), and International League (1967-1972). He was then a National League umpire for 27 seasons, from 1973 to 1999. He worked a total of 3,742 games in 27 seasons. He also appeared regularly in the postseason during those years, including in four World Series (1979, 1987, 1991 and 1996). He was also part of the umpiring crew for the All-Star Game in 1978, 1988 and 1999.
His umpiring career ended late in 1999 when he handed in his resignation, along with a number of colleagues, as part of a failed negotiating ploy by the umpires union. When the dust settled in 2002, he opted to retire with back pay and full benefits for the time missed rather than return to active duty.
He is the step-son of fellow umpire Augie Guglielmo.
