January 31: Today's featured birthday is that of Ted Power, who turns 70.
- 1905 - Christy Mathewson throws the fifth shutout of the five-game 1905 World Series to give the title to the Giants. It is the third shutout of the Series for Big Six.
- 1906 - The Hitless Wonders score seven times off of Three-Finger Brown in the first two innings to complete their upset of the Cubs in the 1906 World Series. The Cubs had finished with what will be the most wins (116) in the majors in the 20th Century.
- 1929 - Down 2-0 in the 9th inning, the Athletics rally to win the 1929 World Series. Mule Haas hits a two-run homer and Bing Miller doubles home the winner.
- 1965 - In Game 7 of the 1965 World Series, Sandy Koufax blanks the Twins for his second shutout of the Series, giving the Dodgers the title.
- 1984 - Kirk Gibson homers twice to give the Tigers the Fall Classic win over the Padres in five games.
- 1992 - With two outs in the bottom of the 9th, Francisco Cabrera singles in the tying and winning runs as the Braves stun the Pirates in the 1992 NLCS. Slow-footed Sid Bream (pictured) scores the winner as LF Barry Bonds's throw fails to catch his former teammate at home.
