January 15: Today's featured birthday is that of Delino DeShields, who turns 56.
- 1939 - Pitcher Victor Starffin drives in the run that gives the Tokyo Giants the Japanese Professional Baseball League title. It is Starffin's fourth sayonara hit of the year, a record that will stand 30 years.
- 1950 - 31-year-old Sam Jethroe wins the 1950 National League Rookie of the Year Award, becoming the oldest player ever to be named a Rookie of the Year. Jethroe had spent seven years with Cleveland teams in the Negro Leagues.
- 2000 - Dusty Baker (pictured) wins the National League Manager of the Year Award. It is Baker's third such award, tying Tony LaRussa for the record.
- 2004 - 42-year-old Roger Clemens becomes the oldest pitcher to win a Cy Young Award. It is the seventh time Clemens has won the Award, the all-time record.
- 2008 - The Seibu Lions win the 2008 Japan Series in seven games. Takayuki Kishi is named Japan Series MVP.
