• 1951 - The Puerto Rican national team wins the 1951 Amateur World Series. It is the last Amateur World Series/Baseball World Cup that the Cuban national team enters and fails to win until 2007.
• 1979 - Nolan Ryan signs with the Houston Astros, inking the first deal worth over a million dollars per year.
• 1998 - Sammy Sosa wins the 1998 National League MVP over Mark McGwire after McGwire had beaten Sosa in the race for Roger Maris's home run record.
