December 18: Today's featured birthday is that of Steve Hovley, who turns 80.
- 1927 - Jimmy Cooney turns an unassisted triple play, catching a line drive by Paul Waner, touching second to retire Lloyd Waner, then tagging out Clyde Barnhart. Oddly, Cooney had been one of the outs in Glenn Wright's unassisted triple play two years earlier.
- 1935 - Babe Ruth plays his final major league game, grounding out against Jim Bivin in the 1st inning before leaving the contest.
- 1971 - Willie Mays scores his 1,950th run, breaking Stan Musial's all-time National League record.
- 1982 - Cal Ripken Jr. starts at third base for the Orioles in a game against the Blue Jays. It begins his record run of 2,632 consecutive games.
- 1987 - In a 6-2 Reds win over the Pirates, Eric Davis (pictured) hits his third grand slam of the month. He is the first National Leaguer with three grand slams in a single month.
