December 26: Today's featured birthday is that of Mario Mendoza, who turns 74.
- 1900 - The National League votes to shrink to eight teams. As there will be just eight major league teams left, the 1900 NL will go down in history as one of the most talent-laden leagues ever assembled.
- 1941 - Hugh Mulcahy (pictured) becomes the first major league player drafted into the US military for service in World War II.
- 1950 - The Japan Series is created, to begin play this fall, between the champions of the new Pacific League and Central League.
- 1966 - Casey Stengel is elected to the Hall of Fame as the Veterans Committee circumvents its usual eligibility rules in light of Stengel's age.
- 1985 - Dave Stieb signs a 11-year contract with the Toronto Blue Jays.
