December 19: Today's featured birthday is that of Chito Martinez, who turns 59.
- 1945 - Harry O'Neill dies in the Battle of Iwo Jima, becoming the second ex-major leaguer to die in World War II. Over 50 former Japanese Professional Baseball League players will die in the war.
- 1973 - Larry Hisle becomes the first DH in a major league exhibition game. He homers twice and drives in seven runs.
- 1985 - Arky Vaughan and Enos Slaughter are elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee.
- 2001 - Hilton Smith (pictured) and Bill Mazeroski are voted] into the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee.
- 2008 - Jonder Martínez throws a no-hitter against Ciego de Avila. It is the first no-hitter of the 2007-2008 Cuban Serie Nacional season and the first no-hitter by a La Habana hurler ever in the Serie Nacional.
- 2017 - The 2017 World Baseball Classic gets underway with a huge upset as Israel wins its debut game on the WBC stage over hosts South Korea, 2-1 in ten innings.
