- 1911 - Helene Hathaway Britton becomes the first female owner of a major league team when her uncle Stanley Robison dies suddenly. Britton is his heir and takes over the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 1952 - St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Bob Slaybaugh is hit by a liner in spring training and loses an eye. He will miss a season before he makes a comeback.
- 1959 - Before an exhibition game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Cincinnati Reds in Havana, Pete Whisenant poses for a photo with a machine gun from Fidel Castro's rebel army.
- 1982 - 1981 National League Cy Young Award winner Fernando Valenzuela ends his holdout, after the Los Angeles Dodgers unilaterally renew his contract for $350,000.
- 1984 - The Philadelphia Phillies deal Willie Hernandez (pictured) and Dave Bergman to the Detroit Tigers for Glenn Wilson and John Wockenfuss. Hernandez will win both the MVP and Cy Young Award in helping the Tigers to a title-winning campaign.
