- 1886 - Sam Barkley is suspended for signing with the Pittsburgh Alleghenies while sale details were still being ironed out. Pittsburgh owner Denny McKnight loses his job as American Association president over the feud.
- 1949 - Joe DiMaggio, struggling in spring training, leaves camp to go to Johns Hopkins University to get his right heel examined.
- 1973 - Arizona State University star Eddie Bane pitches a perfect game against Cal State Northridge.
- 1992 - Ryne Sandberg signs for $7.1 million per season, becoming the highest-paid player in baseball history.
- 1999 - Smokey Joe Williams, Frank Selee (pictured), Orlando Cepeda and Nestor Chylak are elected to the Hall of Fame.
- 2012 - Major League Baseball expands the postseason from eight to ten teams, with an extra wild card team in each league. The two wild card teams in each league will play a Wild Card Game to determine which one will face the team with the league's best record in the Division Series.
