December 22: Today's featured birthday is that of Ken Landreaux, who turns 70.
- 1883 - The Peoria Reds of the Northwestern League try to block the Toledo Blue Stockings from using African-American catcher Fleet Walker (pictured); the move will not work.
- 1932 - The Brooklyn Dodgers acquire Clyde Sukeforth, Tony Cuccinello and Joe Stripp in a trade with the Cincinnati Reds for Ernie Lombardi, Babe Herman and Wally Gilbert. Lombardi will go on to a great career in Cincinnati.
- 1950 - Kozo Naito gets the first win in Hiroshima Carp history, beating the Kokutetsu Swallows, 16-1, in front of 10,000 fans in a home game.
- 1954 - Hank Aaron replaces injured Bobby Thomson in the Milwaukee Braves' lineup. An infielder the past two years, Aaron will successfully make the conversion to the outfield and from Class A to the majors.
- 1956 - Satchel Paige is hired as player-manager of the Birmingham Black Barons. By year's end, he will be pitching in the International League for the first of three straight years with the Miami Marlins.
