December 18: Today's featured birthday is that of Steve Hovley, who turns 80.
- 1894 - Fred Clarke (pictured) sets a record by collecting five hits in the first game of his career. The Louisville Colonels outfielder will become arguably baseball's greatest player-manager during his time with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 1908 - 41-year-old Cy Young throws a no-hitter for the third time in his career. He will be the oldest pitcher to have thrown one until Nolan Ryan 82 years later.
- 1979 - The Inter-American League, the first intercontinental minor league, closes up shop. The Miami Amigos are in first place at the time.
- 1994 - OF Darren Lewis commits the first error of his major league career. He had not erred in 938 chances in over three years in the major leagues until today.
- 1997 - Bobby Witt hits a home run off Ismael Valdes in an interleague game. It is the first regular-season homer by an American League pitcher in 25 years.
