December 21: Today's featured birthday is that of Freddy Sanchez, who turns 47.
- 1917 - Hank Gowdy (pictured) becomes the first major leaguer to enlist in World War I.
- 1925 - Lou Gehrig pinch-hits for Pee Wee Wanninger. It begins his streak of 2,130 consecutive games played.
- 1975 - Nolan Ryan throws his fourth no-hitter for his 100th win. He ties Sandy Koufax for the most career no-hitters.
- 1987 - Phil Niekro wins his 314th game, giving him and brother Joe Niekro 530 major league wins between them. This breaks the record for a brother duo, held previously by Gaylord Perry and Jim Perry.
- 2000 - Tomo Ohka of the Pawtucket Red Sox throws the third perfect game in International League history, beating the Charlotte Knights, 2-0.
