December 19: Today's featured birthday is that of Chito Martinez, who turns 59.
- 1939 - A spitting feud between Billy Jurges and umpire George Magerkurth follows a disputed call over a ball hit along the foul line. NL president Ford Frick will have screens installed by each foul pole to avoid such future problems.
- 1957 - Masaichi Kaneda reaches 2,000 career strikeouts, the first player in Nippon Pro Baseball to have whiffed that many.
- 1973 - Norm Cash (pictured) goes to bat with a piano leg and is forced by ump Ron Luciano to return with a real bat. The incident results from Cash's frustration in Nolan Ryan's second career no-hitter, in which Cash had struck out his first three times. Ryan K's 17 in the contest.
- 1992 - The Seibu Lions reach base with 14 consecutive hitters in the 5th inning following a double play lined into by Koji Akiyama. Overall, they set a NPB record with 13 hits that inning against the Daiei Hawks.
- 1994 - Gene Lamont correctly identifies that Albert Belle is using a corked bat, which will result in Belle's suspension. First, the Indians try to cover for Belle when Jason Grimsley crawls through the ceiling and goes into the umpires' dressing room to replace Belle's bat. The deed is discovered and becomes one of the most flagrant examples of cheating and cover-ups in recent history.
