January 5: Today's featured birthday is that of Chris Nabholz, who turns 58.
- 1917 - Grover Cleveland Alexander (pictured) threatens to retire if the Philadelphia Phillies do not meet his salary demands.
- 1936 - The Boston Braves' new owners survey newspaper reporters for a new name for the club. The Boston Bees will become the team's new name but their performance will not improve and the Braves name will return.
- 1948 - Philadelphia Phillies general manager Herb Pennock, dies of a heart attack; he will be elected to the Hall of Fame later this year.
- 1958 - Ford Frick takes the All-Star Game vote away from fans after recent ballot-stuffing by Cincinnati Reds supporters. It will be 12 years until fans get the right back.
- 2001 - Seibu Lions ace Daisuke Matsuzaka has his driver's license suspended. He will be later caught driving despite the suspension, earning a significant fine.
