January 5: Today's featured birthday is that of Chris Nabholz, who turns 58.
- 1920 - The Negro National League is formed under the guidance of Rube Foster. It will be the first successful Negro League. Charter members are the Chicago American Giants, Kansas City Monarchs, Indianapolis ABCs, Chicago Giants, Dayton Marcos, Cuban Stars, Detroit Stars and St. Louis Giants.
- 1975 - Earl Averill, Billy Herman (pictured) and Bucky Harris are voted into the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee.
- 1977 - Martin Dihigo and John Henry "Pop" Lloyd are voted into the Hall of Fame by the Special Committee on the Negro Leagues.
- 1988 - Jose DeLeon and Luis Encarnacion combine on a four-hitter against the favored Indios de Mayagüez in the 1988 Caribbean Series opener, as their team, Leones del Escogido, will go on to win the tournament.
- 1995 - Shosei Go is voted into the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame.
