December 18: Today's featured birthday is that of Steve Hovley, who turns 80.
- 1886 - Chicken Wolf hits a game-winning home run when a stray dog tears the pant leg of Reds CF Abner Powell.
- 1965 - One of the most famous brawls in baseball history takes place when Juan Marichal attacks Dodgers catcher Johnny Roseboro with his bat. The fight lasts 14 minutes and Marichal is fined $1,750, a National League record at the time.
- 1989 - Felix Fermin (pictured) ties the major league record of four sacrifice hits in a game. He is the first player to lay down four successful sacrifice bunts since Ray Chapman in 1919.
- 1989 - Nolan Ryan becomes the first major league pitcher to register 5,000 strikeouts when he sends Rickey Henderson down on strikes.
- 2000 - The Rockies use a major league-record nine pitchers in a 11-inning game. The last one, catcher Brent Mayne, becomes the first position player to win a game as a pitcher since Rocky Colavito 32 years earlier.
- 2007 - The Rangers rout the Orioles, 30-9, to set an American League record for runs in a game. They score 9 more in the nightcap to set the AL record for runs in a doubleheader, breaking the mark of 36 held by the 1937 Tigers. The 1950 Red Sox and 1955 White Sox had previously held the single-game AL record of 29. No team had scored 30 in the major leagues since the 1897 Colts.
