December 18: Today's featured birthday is that of Steve Hovley, who turns 80.
- 1920 - Ray Chapman collapses after being beaned by Carl Mays and dies the following day - making him the only Major League player killed on the field. The Chapman beaning results in rule changes that help to usher in the live-ball era.
- 1948 - Babe Ruth dies of throat cancer in New York City.
- 1961 - Roger Maris ties an American League record with a homer in his sixth consecutive game.
- 1964 - Sandy Koufax (pictured) pitches a 3-0 shutout over the Cardinals, then promptly goes on the disabled list for the remainder of the season with an elbow injury suffered on August 8th.
- 1986 - Dale Holman of the Richmond Braves becomes the first professional player to play for two teams in one game. A game between the Braves and Syracuse Chiefs was suspended because of rain on June 16th when he was with the Chiefs. By the time the game is completed today, Holman had been traded to Richmond and is in its lineup.
