- 1876 - The first game in National League history is played. Joe Borden and the Boston Red Caps wins 6-5 over the Philadelphia Athletics.
- 1914 - Babe Ruth makes his professional baseball debut, throwing a six-hit shutout for the Baltimore Orioles in a win over the Buffalo Bisons in the International League.
- 1944 - Akio Kanemitsu becomes the first player in Nippon Pro Baseball history to hit a home run in his first plate appearance; he will only hit one more in his career. The victimized pitcher is superstar Hideo Fujimoto.
- 1957 - John Kennedy becomes the first black player in Philadelphia Phillies history, making them the last National League team to integrate. Kennedy pinch-runs for Solly Hemus; it has been over ten years since Jackie Robinson's NL debut.
- 1993 - Chris Bosio (pictured) walks his first two batters, then is perfect the rest of the way in a no-hitter as the Mariners defeat the Red Sox, 7-0.
