Biographical Information[edit]
Taylor Featherston has been in the majors from 2015 to 2017. With the Los Angeles Angels in 2015, he appeared in 101 games, with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2016, he was in 19 games, and with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2017, he got into 17 games.
He has played more second base in the majors than any other position, although he has also had over 100 innings at each of third base and shortstop.
Taylor was born in Houston, TX in 1989, a year when the young Craig Biggio played catcher for the Houston Astros. Taylor went to high school near Houston and then attended college in the Dallas, TX area. He was drafted in the 5th round of the 2011 Amateur Draft by the Colorado Rockies, and Matt Purke of the same college (Texas Christian University) was drafted as well in the 3rd round.
Taylor worked his way up the Rockies organization, and by 2014 had made it as far as AA, where he played for the Tulsa Drillers, hitting .260 with 16 home runs and 14 stolen bases. He tied for the team lead in home runs. Then, over the winter, he was drafted away by the Chicago Cubs in the 2014 Rule V Draft and on the same day was purchased by the Angels in what was likely a pre-arranged deal.
Taylor played only 7 games in the minors in 2015, making his major league debut on April 12th. He was the most-utilized backup infielder for the Angels, playing 39 games at third base, 33 at second base and 22 at shortstop. He also pinch-ran 22 times.
The following February he was traded to the Phillies and spent most of the 2016 season with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, hitting .254 with 13 home runs in 99 games. He came to the majors at the end of July and for most of August, mostly serving as a pinch-hitter and getting two of his three hits against Los Angeles Dodgers pitching.
He was back with Lehigh Valley for 46 games in 2017, and was sold in June to the Rays, for whom he mostly played second base. Most of his appearances for the Rays were in June and at the start of July, and about half of them were starts. He also played 31 games in the minors for the Rays' affiliate, the Durham Bulls.
In December 2017 he was signed as a free agent by the Minnesota Twins for the 2018 season, and after being released in June, played some independent ball and was signed after a month by the Cincinnati Reds. He did not appear in the majors. In the minors, splitting his time between the Twins and Reds organizations, he hit .197.
For the next season, he was signed by the Kansas City Royals, and primarily played for their AA affiliate. He did not play in either 2020 or 2021. Featherston joined the Seattle Mariners organization in April 2022 and became a coach for the Arkansas Travelers.
In an unusual circumstance, in 2020 he married a woman whose first name is also Taylor.
