Talk:Tal Erel

From BR Bullpen

1) Israel Defense Forces from 2014-2017. Not sure if you can ever put veterans during peacetime for an Israeli given how often they get attacked but not sure if we have a more appropriate veterans category.

2) Wikipedia says he was born in Ramat Gan; Olympics.com says Tel Aviv. - Mischa (talk) 19:34, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

With mandatory conscription in countries like Israel and Switzerland, it's the non-veterans who become notable. Our veterans categories are very U.S. centric; maybe a category like "Veterans of foreign armed forces" could capture people like Erel, evading the question of whether they served during conflicts or not. A project for you if you want to undertake it Philippe (talk) 13:12, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

This would also cover some other countries too - we have many South Koreans in the Military Veterans during Peacetime. If we say Veterans of Foreign Armed Forces, that does make it sound very US centric otherwise. Would we then break down WWII vets from the US vs. Canada vs. Japan, etc.? - Mischa (talk) 13:23, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

You can be in both categories (foreign armed forces and World War II, for example). We already have a number of players with a couple different veterang categories (e.g. Hank Gowdy). Philippe (talk) 17:00, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
Veterans of Foreign Armed Forces also makes it sound like we're entirely American-focused. Maybe make USA Military Veterans, Canadian Military Veterans, South Korean Military Veterans, Israeli Military Veterans? That'd be a lot of work of course. - Mischa (talk) 17:19, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
