Talk:José Cruz, Sr.

From BR Bullpen

It's just a little thing, but in his entire 19-year career, I never heard Jose Cruz called "Cheo" or referred to as Puerto Rican. He was just Jose Cruz, an excellent hitter who unfortunately had to play most of his career in Houston, where the hitting wasn't as easy as elsewhere. Does anyone remember those two items as being a frequent reference to Cruz? - Randy 00:52, 16 March 2008 (EDT)

To follow up on this, I did a Google search for "Jose Cruz" and got nearly 500,000 hits. When I did the same search but for hits without "Jr.", I got over 200,000 hits. But when I did a search for "Jose Cruz" with "Cheo", I got fewer than 1,000 hits. - Randy 01:25, 16 March 2008 (EDT)

I was never an Astro fan, but I don't think I've ever heard him called Cheo. --Jeff 01:50, 16 March 2008 (EDT)

I think the nickname was added by someone who posted lots of nicknames for players from the Puerto Rican League. He might have been called Cheo in the Puerto Rican League and not in the US. - --Mischa 11:13, 16 March 2008 (EDT)

OK, I gave him a new introduction, based on his U.S. playing, and put the information about being Cheo and Puerto Rican down a bit in the text. I didn't want to lose the information, but I did want to put it in perspective. - Randy 14:10, 16 March 2008 (EDT)
