Biographical Information[edit]

Takayuki Matsushima was pitching for Nippon Oil in the Japanese industrial leagues when he made the Japanese national team for the 1994 Baseball World Cup. At age 34, he was their oldest player by six years over Daishin Nakamura. He had an unusual stat line over his three games: only two hits in 5 2/3 IP while walking six and fanning 12. He had a 5.06 ERA and no decisions. While he was the least-used of Japan's seven hurlers, he was third on the Bronze Medal winners in K behind Masanori Sugiura and Yasuyuki Yamauchi. He started against Niklas Liden and Sweden and struck out 8 in 3 hitless innings (2 BB, HB) before Junichi Kawahara took over in what would be a combined no-hitter.
