Biographical Information[edit]

Yasuyuki Yamauchi pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball and for the Japanese national team.

Yamauchi represented Japan in the 1994 Baseball World Cup. The Hiroshima Carp drafted him in the first round of the 1994 NPB draft. He joined the rotation as a rookie, and had a 14-10 with a 3.03 ERA in 1995. In 1995 NPB All-Star Game, Yamauchi allowed 2 runs in 2 innings and got the win. He won the NPB Rookie of the Year Award with Masafumi Hirai. He was used as a swingman in 1996, and collected 11 wins with a 3.90 ERA. Yamauchi was selected into the 1997 NPB All-Star Game, and pitched a shutout inning in Game 2. He ended up 7-11 with a 5.21 ERA, and allowed a league-leading 88 earned runs. He still struggled in 1998, and recorded a 5.19 ERA in 15 starts. He was 4-4 with a 5.89 ERA before undergoing a right elbow surgery in 1999. The Hiroshima native was moved from the rotation after coming back, and he recorded a 3.96 ERA in 9 games in 2000. He had a terrible 5.05 ERA in 20 appearances in 2001, and he only pitched 3 games in 2002. Yamauchi announced his retirement after the 2002 season. After retiring, he became the ni-gin pitching coach for the Carp from 2006 to 2009, and coached for their big club from 2010 to 2014.

Yamauchi's repertoire included a fastball (peak 89.4 mph), curveball, slider and forkball.

Overall, Yamauchi was 45-44 with a 4.40 ERA and pitched 677 innings in 8 seasons in NPB.
