Biographical Information[edit]

Susumu Urushibara played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 5 years.

Urushibara joined the Dai Tokyo club when the Japanese Professional Baseball League was founded in 1936, and he was 10-for-49 in the spring season and 12-for-76 in the fall; he led the league with 3 hit-by-pitches in the fall. On October 24, 1936, he was walked on three balls (due to umpire Nobuaki Nidegawa losing track of the count, atypical of that respected ump), and it was the first time that happened in NPB. Urushibara hit .211/.286/.228 in the 1937 spring season before he was traded to the Eagles club, and he hit .257/.333/.343 for his new team.

His batting line was .205/.314/.240 in 1938 spring season, and he batted .125/.210/.152 in the fall season. Urushibara stole 3 bases in an inning on June 1, 1938, and he was the second player to do so in NPB history (following his teammate Toichi Yanagisawa). He struggled again in 1939 as his batting line was .170/.244/.250, then he announced his retirement after hitting .185/.217/.203 in 1940. He later coached Naruto High School.

Overall, Urushibara hit .187/.277/.230 with 179 hits and 4 homers in 5 seasons in NPB.
