Sumter Flyers

In 1991 the Sumter, SC team in the South Atlantic League changed from being an Atlanta Braves affiliate to a Montreal Expos one and changed their names from the Sumter Braves to the Sumter Flyers. Managed by Lorenzo Bundy, the Flyers went 64-75 and drew 45,639, 13th in the 14-team SAL. Tavo Alvarez (12-10, 3.24, 158 K in 153 IP) was voted as the #8 prospect in the league by circuit managers, while the #1 prospect was CF Rondell White (.262/~.330/.422, 50 SB, 109 K, 80 R), who also was the team's lone All-Star. Pitchers Kevin Foster (10-4, 2.74), Carlos Perez (2-2, 2.44) and Gabe White (6-9, 3.26) all would go on to some levels of success, as would 3B Shane Andrews (.208/~.330/.385, 132 K) and SS Jolbert Cabrera (.204/~.248/.225). The team became the Albany Polecats in 1992. No professional baseball club has since been located in Sumter.
