Biographical Information

Edmund Burke "Stubby" Magner played middle infield for the 1911 New York Highlanders managed by Hal Chase.

He was born in Kalamazoo, MI, one of nine major leaguers born there (through 2010). He was the second, after John Ganzel.

Magner attended Cornell University during 1908-11, the same years that Dave Howard was there. Jim Rutherford was also there during part of that time. At Cornell, Magner was the baseball team captain, playing shortstop, and also received his degree, majoring in law. He was listed as being from Buffalo. His father also graduated from Cornell.

Stubby is listed at 5 ft. 3 in. and only 135 lbs.

In 1912 he played for Wilkes-Barre in the minors. A teammate was Joe Delahanty.

Taken from his listing on the Dayton National Cemetery website: EDMUND BURKE MAGNER (Section 10, Row 12, Grave 48): Lieutenant, U.S. Navy, served during World War I. Mr. Magner played baseball as an infielder with the New York Yankees in 1911. He played 13 games as short stop and second baseman and batted .212. His nickname was "Stubby."
