Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Stone Garrett had an unconventional road to the major leagues. He was originally drafted by the Miami Marlins in the 8th round of the 2014 amateur draft out of a high school in Texas and played in their organization from 2014 to 2019, reaching AA that final season with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp of the Southern League. His numbers at that last stop were underwhelming - .243/.289/.413 in 119 games, with a dismal ratio of 18 walks to 127 strikeouts.
In 2020, he was one of a large number of minor league players who were handed their release when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the minor leagues. He had earned his real estate license thanks to off-season training the previous two years, and began what he thought would be his permanent career, selling a number of houses. He had created a profile on the site "LinkedIn" to help his business along, but that also drew the attention of persons in the baseball world who contacted him. This eventually led to his being signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks, who were looking to round out their minor league rosters as the leagues were about to start up again in 2021. He spent that season with the AA Amarillo Sod Poodles, where he hit .280 with 25 homers in 103 games, and also got to play his first two games in AAA with the Reno Aces. In 2022, he hit .275 with 28 homers and 95 RBIs in 103 games for Reno in the Pacific Coast League, numbers that were so good that the big league D-Backs had no choice but to give him a look. He made his debut on August 17th. He continued to hit in the Show, finishing at .276 in 27 games, with an OPS+ of 136.
Having shown that he could hit major league pitching, he was signed by the Washington Nationals before the 2023 season and after only two games with the AAA Rochester Red Wings, for whom he went 4 for 8, he was called up to D.C. and did not look back. In 89 games for the Nats, he hit .269 with 9 homers and 40 RBIs, with an OPS+ of 122, playing mainly in left field. He started off as a back-up, but gradually increased his playing time as he showed good things both with the bat and with the glove. Everything was going great until on August 23rd, he fractured his left fibula while trying unsuccessfully to rob D.J. LeMahieu of a home run in a game against the New York Yankees at New Yankee Stadium. He was carted off the field and immediately placed on the injured list, his rookie season likely over.
