Biographical Information

Outfielder Steve Swain was selected by the Houston Astros in the first round of the 1982 amateur draft with the 15th overall selection, between Ron Karkovice and Sam Horn. He was the first high school outfielder taken that year. He played three seasons in the Astros organization, never reaching above the Class A level. Steve hit .203/.252/.321 for the 1982 Auburn Astros, with 86 strikeouts in 237 at-bats. He fielded .891 and easily led New York-Penn League outfielders with 14 errors (Rolando Roomes was second with 8).

After not playing in 1983, Swain split 1984 between the Auburn Astros (.234/.246/.306, 1 BB, 35 K in 127 PA) and Asheville Tourists (8 for 22, 2B, HR, BB). He ended up with Asheville in '85, batting .163/.226/.173 with 35 whiffs in 98 at-bats. Overall, his batting line was only .210/.251/.297 with 163 K in 481 AB. He hit four homers and stole 9 bases in 14 tries. He fielded just .882.

His son Brett played NFL football for the Green Bay Packers.
