Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher Steve Stieb was the All-Tournament catcher in the 1977 College World Series. He was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 13st round of the 1979 Amateur Draft. He played three seasons, topping out at AA ball with the Savannah Braves. He hit .223/.282/.343 for the 1979 Kingsport Braves. He led Appalachian League catchers in putouts (257), assists (38) and passed balls (10, tied with Mark Salas. In 1980, Steve batted .226/.289/.307 for the Durham Bulls and showed a fine arm on the hill, with one hit and no runs in four innings pitched. He ended up in 1981 with Durham (8 for 51, 6 BB, 3 2B, 4 R in 10 IP) and Savannah (.214/.267/.405 in 28 G).

His brother, Dave Stieb, had a 16-year big league career, spending all but one season (1993) with the Toronto Blue Jays.
