Biographical Information[edit]
Steve Shartzer was drafted in the 5th round of the 1975 amateur draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. He played for the 1975 Johnson City Cardinals and the 1976 St. Petersburg Cardinals. By 1977 he had apparently signed with an agent and made demands that were "so completely out of the question that we placed him on our suspension list", according to Paul Fauks, the Cardinals' assistant director of player development. [1] Shartzer never showed up for Spring Training, allowing the Cardinals to place him on the suspension list and effectively block him from playing for them or anyone else.
Shartzer returned to baseball as head coach of Huntingdon College from 1983-1992. He led Huntingdon to multiple NAIA District 27 and Area 5 tournaments. Huntingdon made the 1987 NAIA College World Series. He was then head coach of Berry College from 1993-1997. He led Berry to the NAIA postseason four times in five years. Berry won the 1997 TranSouth Athletic Conference Tournament in his last season.
Shartzer was later a teacher and softball coach at Robertsdale High School until retiring in 2014. [2]
