Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Steve Phillips was signed by the New York Yankees as an undrafted free agent and played from 1991 to 1995 in the Yankee chain. He played in Independent leagues from 1995 to 1997. In 7 seasons he played only 539 games, hitting .274 with 77 HR and 29 SB in 1979 AB. Phillips began his career with the 1991 Oneonta Yankees, hitting .260/~.391/.465 and outproducing teammates Jorge Posada and Shane Spencer. The next year, Steve batted .247/~.348/.362 with the Greensboro Hornets, leading the team in doubles (26) and walks (71) and continuing to outhit Posada, though Spencer was a bit better. In 1993, he was on the San Bernardino Spirit and produced at a .274/~.384/.466 clip while dropping into a part-time role for the first time. The next season, Phillips hit .296/.413/.472 for the same team in the same situation. His OBP was 22 points behind the California League leader and he was near the top 10 in average but did not have enough plate appearances to qualify. Peaking at AA, Phillips batted .258/~.378/.484 in 11 games for the 1995 Norwich Navigators, a bit behind the team's hot prospect, Ruben Rivera. He then moved to the Aberdeen Pheasants and hit .308/?/.573 and cracked 17 homers; it must be kept in mind that the Prairie League was a high-offensive loop and and Phillips was not in the top 25 in average, though he was possibly in the top 10 in home runs. He hit .266/?/.515 in a return engagement with the Pheasants. He concluded his playing career with the 1997 Allentown Ambassadors, hitting .286/?/.561 and ranking higher on the league offensive leaderboards than he had in the Prairie.
In 1998, Phillips was the hitting coach for the Jupiter Hammerheads, and in 1999 he was on the Harrisburg Senators staff. In 2000 he began managing in the minor leagues. In 2005, he was the hitting coach for the Carolina Mudcats, and in 2006-2008 he was on the Albuquerque Isotopes coaching staff.
