Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Steve Perry was taken 25th overall by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1979 amateur draft, between catcher Bob Geren and outfielder Mike Stenhouse. He played until 1984, reaching Triple-A his latter two seasons.

The wild hurler went 28-40 in his six-year career, allowing 350 walks and 46 wild pitches in 573 innings. In 1980, he pitched 155 innings and allowed 104 walks to only 95 strikeouts. The next year, he had 44 walks and 38 strikeouts in 50 innings of work. Hits were also an issue, as he surrendered 637, an average of 10 per nine frames. Home runs were rare for the opposition, however -- he allowed only one in 1980 (155 IP), none in 1981 (50 IP) and one in 1984 (90 IP). All told, he surrendered only 34 in his career.

Perry had losing records every season except, interestingly, the one he posted his highest ERA. In 1983, he was 9-6 despite a 6.96 mark. His first taste of Triple-A came that year -- in 17 appearances (10 starts) for the Albuquerque Dukes, he was 6-4 with a 7.43 ERA. His career mark was 5.34.
