Biographical Information[edit]

Steve Owens played in the minors then won over 900 games as a college coach.

Owens hit .349 at St. Lawrence, including .454 as a senior, and was 73-for-80 in steals. He also led the school's football team in rushing yardage as a junior and senior, scoring 18 touchdowns. The Chicago Cubs took him in the 25th round of the 1987 amateur draft, the same round another Owens, Jayhawk Owens. He hit .253/.352/.373 with 12 steals in 14 tries for the Geneva Cubs. He scored 31 runs in 67 games but fielded only .896 at the hot corner. In 1988, he was with the Charleston Wheelers but his batting fell to .215/.304/.244, he was less successful on steals (17 SB, 10 CS) and he fielded .888 at 3B to end his pro career. He returned to Ithaca College to earn his master's degree; he was assistant coach in baseball and football there.

From 1992-1999, he was head coach at the State University of New York at Cortland. He took the team to the 1995 Division III College World Series, 1997 Division III College World Series, 1998 Division III College World Series and 1999 Division III College World Series and went 245-82-1. He was State University of New York Athletic Conference Coach of the Year four times. He piloted LeMoyne College from 2000-2010, winning two Metro Atlantic Conference C oach of the Year nods and going 342-217.

Owens' next stop was Bryant University. He was 327-184-2 in his nine seasons there, giving him a career record of 914-483-3. He won Northeast Conference Coach of the Year in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016. He then moved to Rutgers University as head coach.
