Steve Nero

From BR Bullpen

Steve Nero was on the British national team in the 1989 European Championship, their first European Championship appearance in 18 years. He hit .417 with 7 RBI in 12 at-bats. He was 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA, fanning seven in six innings. He led the team in average (.047 over Rick Soan), tied Soan for the most extra-base hits (3), tied for first in RBI (with Oscar Marcelino, Julian Dodwell and Soan). He also led in ERA (1.50 ahead of Brian Thurston), was second in K (18 behind Thurston) and tied Thurston and Marcelino for first in wins. Despite that strong performance, it was his only major tournament for the national team. He was with the team when they played a "Legends of Baseball" team that visited Britain; that squad included Willie Stargell, Luis Tiant, Billy Williams and many other stars.
