Biographical Information

Steve King was already 27 years old in 1871, when the National Association started. He was among the oldest players on his team, the 1871 Troy Haymakers, but was the star, with a .396 batting average, good for fourth in the league. His teammate Lip Pike led the team in slugging percentage and managed the team part of the year.

A year older in 1872, Steve slipped to .305 and his career was over.

Born in 1844 in Lansingburgh, NY, which is now part of Troy, NY, he played for Troy, and died in Troy in 1895, the year when Babe Ruth was born. Prior to the founding of the National Association, he had played starting in 1866 for the Unions of Lansingburgh who later became the amateur Troy Haymakers.

His brother Marshall King was also a ballplayer.
