Biographical Information

Steve Hinton played five years in the minor leagues, reaching AA.

Hinton was picked in the 42nd round of the 1988 amateur draft by the New York Mets but opted for college instead. Hinton had a fine college campaign in 1991. He hit .338/~.423/.604 with 10 triples and 90 RBI in 73 games. Hinton was chosen to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Conference team at DH. He was third in NCAA Division I in RBI and tied for 4th in triples. He helped Creighton to the 1991 College World Series and made the Series All-Star team as one of the three outfielders picked, one of two Creighton players selected. The Kansas City Royals took him in the 9th round of the 1991 amateur draft, one round after Kevin Hodges, one round before Mike Sweeney and two rounds before Joe Randa.

Hinton debuted professionally with the 1991 Eugene Emeralds, hitting .283/~.341/.388 as the first baseman while teammate Randa dominated the league. In 1992, he hit .270/~.353/.384 for the Appleton Foxes and his 10 sacrifice flies led the Midwest League. Hinton moved up to the Wilmington Blue Rocks in 1993 and slipped to a .247/~.336/.355 batting line, not good for a 1B-OF who was one of his team's older hitters. He did not help himself afield, with 18 errors, the most of any Carolina League first sacker. In 1994, Hinton moved to the Montréal Expos system. He hit .286/.363/.565 for the Burlington Bees and .153/.244/.208 in 22 games for the West Palm Beach Expos. Hinton finished his pro career in 1995 with the Harrisburg Senators, batting .222/~.440/.222 in 10 games. One of the team's other players was a fellow star of the 1991 College World Series who never made it to the majors, Gary Hymel.

After retiring as a player, Hinton went back to college to get his teaching degree at Penn State. He then became a scout. He helped sign Sam Fuld. In 2008, Hinton is the "Special Assistant to the Scouting Director" for the Chicago Cubs.
