Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Steve Gasser was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 2nd round of the 1985 amateur draft. By 1987 he had made it to AAA with the Portland Beavers, but late in the season he began to show symptoms of Steve Blass disease [1]. He only pitched one game in 1988 (with the Orlando Twins), walking all 6 batters he faced on April 18. Pitching coach Steve Comer was tasked with re-working his mechanics, but showing no prgress he placed on the inactive list by May. On December 7, 1988, Gasser was traded by the Twins with Jeff Bumgarner, and Toby Nivens to the New York Mets for Wally Backman and Mike Santiago. He had arthrospcopic surgery on his shoulder and missed the 1989 season, although he was working out with the Pittsfield Mets by August. Gerry Hunsicker was quoted as saying "He's there because we just want him to throw, to learn how to throw strikes. He would emabarass the the team right now if he went out to pitch..." Gasser pitched just 11 games for the Columbia Mets and Sumter Braves in 1990 before ending his career.
